One might not consider slide rules, mystery novels, umbrellas, and hotel “Do Not Disturb” signs as exhibition material for the Bennington Museum. However, from February 24 to April 4 they are just that, along with many other collections from Bennington residents. These items form “Bennington Collects”, a community-based exhibition that will feature an eclectic mix that might make you think about what YOU collect.
The exhibition, the first edition of which delighted visitors in the fall of 2005, gives an intimate look at collectors and why they collect. Collecting seems to be ingrained in us, often from a very young age. Why do we attach importance to the things we save and cherish? Each collection in this exhibit will include a personal statement as to why the individual began collecting.
As the umbrella collector commented, she now owns 20 umbrellas “simply because they make her smile”. The gentleman with the “Do Not Disturb” signs fondly remembers past trips and vacations when he sees his signs hanging from doorknobs around the house. Their origins range from inexpensive hotels to The Ritz in London. A little different than bringing home a postcard! The voyeur in all of us will enjoy a peek into the personal collections and stories of people right in our community. This exhibit is sponsored by United McGill Corporation.
You can view the exhibition with regular admission to the museum. Or better yet buy a membership! It’s a bargain, with free admission to the museum and discounts on many events and the shop. The Bennington Museum is located at 75 Main St. (Route 9) one mile west of the intersection of Routes 7 and 9 in downtown Bennington, Vermont. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. closed Wednesdays.
