Susan B. Anthony, the Invincible

On Thursday, Mar. 6 at 7:00 p.m., the Bennington Museum will welcome Sally Matson who will perform in character as 19th century civil rights leader Susan B. Anthony, the Invincible.  Using Anthony’s own words, fiery speeches, humorous letters, and revealing diary entries, Matson has woven together a story filled with wit and emotion.   Although Anthony received a marriage proposal from a wealthy Vermont widower, she turned down all proposals and spent her life on the road, campaigning for abolition, women’s rights, and woman suffrage.  Matson transports the audience to the time of the Underground Railroad, Civil War, fights over Constitutional Amendments, Anthony’s arrest and trial for voting illegally in Rochester, and countless trips out West.  Matson has been touring the country as the feisty activist for five years.  This Vermont Humanities Council event is sponsored by the Bennington Historical Society.  Admission is free.

A graduate of Northwestern University School of Communication, Matson studied writing at the University of Virginia and Manhattanville College.  Her acting and directing career has spanned thirty years.   Matson performed in a Department of Defense Show in the Pacific and has been a writer and interviewer on CT Cable TV.

The Bennington Museum is located at 75 Main Street (Route 9), Bennington, in The Shires of Vermont. The museum is just a short ride from Manchester, Williamstown, and eastern New York.
