| Simon and Herta Moselsio's Art at the Bennington Museum |
| In celebration of Bennington College’s 75 years of innovative arts education, the Bennington Museum will feature the art and sculpture of Simon and Herta Moselsio from Mar. 13 through May 5. The Moselsios were two of Bennington College’s first art instructors, teaching ceramics and sculpture, with tenures lasting over 25 years. The collection of their work on exhibit will demonstrate the artists’ exciting diversity. Simon’s work is eclectic, ranging from highly sensitive portrait busts to late abstract paintings, but each piece demonstrates a commitment to craftsmanship and thorough knowledge of the medium in which it has been created. Herta will be represented by a selection of her ceramic and bronze animal sculptures, as well as examples of her more utilitarian pottery and photography.
In addition to sculpture, ceramic arts, and paintings, the Moselsios also experimented with photography, including both still and moving pictures. Many of their films include rare footage of famous European artists, such as the Cubist painter Georges Braque and the modernist sculptor Jacques Lipchitz, in their studios. Some of these are the only known moving pictures of these artists at work. The films of the Moselsios themselves at work in their studio provide a rich context for their art and serve as a wonderful complement to the works on view. As with Braque and Lipchitz, the films provide unique insight into the Moselsios’ creative lives. A highlight of the Moselsio motion picture event will be a screening of a 1943 film depicting Martha Graham’s dance “Lamentations.” Searching for the most effective means to convey the essence of their subject, the Moselsios’ succeeded by capturing Graham’s bold, moving artistry on 16 mm film. With an introduction by John Martin, dance critic of the New York Times, and musical accompaniment by Louis Horst, this “motion picture study” of Graham is one of the Moselsios most “artistic” films. Graham taught at Bennington College’s renowned dance program in the late 1930s, and was a pioneer of modern dance. A special program, Art in Motion: Films by Simon and Herta Moselsio, will be presented at 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 24. Admission is $3 for members of the Bennington Museum and $5 for non-members. Students with School ID are free. |
