| Workshops Offered at the Bennington Museum |
| Two exciting workshops are being offered by the Bennington Museum that are based on the current exhibit Reimagining the Distaff Toolkit. On May 4 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Debra Priestly, an artist featured in the exhibit, will lead a hands-on workshop that will change the way you view objects normally taken for granted. Bring something from home - an old tool, a measuring cup, an empty Mason jar - and use it as the basis for a narrative about the meaning, history, and importance of objects. The object will become the focal point of a work of art you create. $20 for members and $25 for non-members. This workshop is for Adults Only.
Debra Priestly is a visual artist from New York City and upstate New York. Priestly makes mixed media objects, incorporating painting, drawing, digital imagery, and sound. Her art has been featured in numerous exhibitions throughout the United States, New Zealand and Guatemala. Publications featuring her work include The New York Times, ArtNews, Art in America, and The History of African-American Women Artists, by Lisa E. Farrington. She is a professor at Queens College in New York City where she has been teaching since 1998. Her art is part of several permanent and private collections and is included in the traveling exhibit now at the Bennington Museum. As a family, explore the temporary exhibit Reimagining the Distaff Toolkit at the Family Workshop being offered on May 10 from 1:00 pm. to 3:00 p.m. Look for meaning in the objects used by the artists, and try to determine the story that each piece in the exhibit shares. Work together, using a simple tool or kitchen utensil you have brought from home to turn that object into a work of art. The object you bring should be something you do not plan on using again! The fee for this workshop is $2 for members and $8 for non-members. Space is limited in these workshops, and they fill up quickly. Advanced registration is required. Call 802-447-1571 and speak with the Programs Coordinator. |
