Local Artist at the Bennington Museum “Obsessed” with New England

From May 12 – June 23 the Bennington Museum welcomes artist Nancy E. Winters.  This special exhibition is held at the museum as part of the on-going Local Artist Program.  Winters’ watercolors are bold in color, and in size.  Her paintings appear even larger than they actually are, as if you could step into the colorful New England they represent.

While evoking thoughts of traditional New England, Winters’ work has a bit of a twist.  Although the paintings show pieces of stereotypical New England, colonial houses, beat-up pickup trucks, and steepled churches,  they have a liveliness and humor one doesn’t expect in such views.  The result is refreshing, fun, and aesthetically pleasing.  Winters says that her work is influenced by her appreciation of New England, and also by the specific culture represented in the literature of Melville, Hawthorne, and Dickinson, and in the art of Edward Hopper and Charles Burchfield.

For twenty-five years, Winters was a fixture in the New York City film and theatre industry.  She supported herself as a set designer. In 2000 she worked on A Beautiful Mind and then decided she wanted to do her own work full time.  Following her time in New York City, Winters moved into a barn on her sister’s property in Westford, Vermont.  She says that her goal is to become a part of the culture and heritage of the Northeast, and through her amazing watercolors, she just might.

You can view the exhibition with regular admission to the museum. Or better yet buy a membership! It’s a bargain, with unlimited free admission to the museum and discounts on many events and the shop. The Bennington Museum is located at 75 Main St. (Route 9) one mile west of the intersection of Routes 7 and 9 in downtown Bennington, Vermont.
