Gallery Talk To Close Out Distaff Toolkit Exhibition
On Thursday, May 29 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Jamie Franklin, curator of the Bennington Museum will lead a gallery talk of the Reimagining the Distaff Toolkit Exhibit. This exhibit will be dismantled on June 2 and begin its 5-year national tour. This gallery talk is free for museum members and $5 for non-members. If you have not seen this exhibit, or have questions regarding the pieces or their meaning, now is the time to come over to the Bennington Museum.

Reimagining the Distaff Toolkit is an exciting exhibit of contemporary art sponsored by Bennington Potters and curated by Dr. Rickie Solinger, historian, curator and author. Each work of art has at its visible core a tool that was important for women's domestic labor from the 18th century through World War II. Each old tool becomes the fulcrum for a new work of art. Artists have placed objects such as a dressmakers’ figure, graters, pots, pans, baskets, hoes, dress patterns, rolling pins, buckets, darning eggs, rug-beaters, and other tools at the center of their work. One piece will incorporate a 19th century distaff, which was used to hold wool during spinning. .

The Bennington Museum is located at 75 Main Street (Route 9), Bennington, in The Shires of Vermont. The museum is just a short ride from Manchester, Williamstown, and eastern New York. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the museum is closed on Wednesdays. Visit www.benningtonmuseum.org or call 802-447-1571 for more information about the museum.
