From August 18 through September
29, the Bennington
Museum will present the
latest installation of the Local Artist Progam.
Carolyn Shattuck, an artist who resides in Rutland, will display her series of paintings
titled “The Unstill Lifes”.
These vibrant images instantly evoke thoughts
of distant countries and exotic, colorful places, which is exactly what they are
intended to do. Shattuck painted the
works after traveling in Mexico
and South Africa,
as well as visiting various flea markets.
Some of the paintings are abstract, while others show glimpses of
flowers, a pitcher, or even a praying mantis. The colors are flamboyant and
exciting and the objects seem to leap from the canvas with wonderful
perspectives and angles.
Originally from Montreal,
Canada, Shattuck has
traveled extensively, including three years in Okinawa, Japan,
where the history and beauty of Japanese prints influenced her artwork. After her
time in Japan in the 1970’s,
she returned to the United States
and studied painting at Bard
College. Her interests in
art have varied from developing a unique printing method to
studying the folk imagery of New England tombstones.
Her focus in the past decade has been on Book Arts, a combination of
drawing and printing techniques in three-dimensional forms.
Carolyn has exhibited her work
nationally in numerous exhibitions and received many awards including the University of Texas, Purchase Award, National Works on Paper. She teaches workshops and is an adjunct
instructor at Castleton State College. Her exhibit may be viewed at the Bennington Museum with regular admission.
The museum is located at 75 Main St. and is open daily 10-5. Closed Wednesdays. Visit www.benningtonmuseum.org for more
